PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor laser with surge protection, which has a structure wherein absorption can be performed with a capacitor for protection surely when surge is generated without complicated work in assembly, and an optical pickup using the semiconductor laser. SOLUTION: A plurality of leads 11-13 are fixed so as to be electrically insulated respectively and stretched vertically, and a stem 1 is formed. A laser chip 2 is arranged on one side of the stem 1. At least one out of an anode and a cathode of the laser chip 2 is electrically connected with the two leads 11, 12 via a wire 8, and the periphery of the laser chip 2 is covered with a cap 4. A chip capacitor 3 is bonded directly by using conductive agent without interposing a wire to a part between the two leads 11, 12 on the other side (a side which is not covered with the cap 4 and exposed) of the stem 1 with which the anode and the cathode of the laser chip 2 are connected. |
