PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a chitin fiber which is hardly fused in a living body, to obtain a chitin fiber aggregate comprising the fibers, to obtain a medical material comprising the chitin aggregates, and to obtain a wound-covering protection material comprising the chitin fiber aggregates. SOLUTION: It is found out that the chitin fiber is hardly fused, when the chitin fiber is produced by subjecting chitin having a specific mol.wt. to a wet spinning treatment and then used in a human body, and it is confirmed that the chitin fiber is a new chitin fiber having not been obtained. The method for producing a chitin fiber is characterized by using chitin which has a solution viscosity of 2 to 48 centipedes at 30 deg.C, when dissolved in a concentration of 0.2 wt.% in a dimethly acetamide solution containing lithium chloride in an concentration of 8 wt.%.
