PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image scanning apparatus and an image scanning method which can prevent an image from deteriorating. SOLUTION: Correcting operation is so applied with a limit of 0.25 millimeter which is a half as large as 0.5 millimeter corresponding to the line width of a standard print character and abnormal pixels are corrected until the number of successive abnormal pixels corresponds to 0.25 millimeter; when the number of successive abnormal pixels exceeds it, an alarm is generated and document reading operation is not performed, so image deterioration caused under the influence of side effects of the correcting operation can be suppressed as much as possible and a user can be warned of the staining of a read optical system, so that the maintainability will be improved.
