PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a kit which can be so prepared as to render the balance of each solution. SOLUTION: The multi-part color developing kit includes (1) a first solution of pH 7-12.5 containing (a) water, (b) a color developing agent in the form of a free base present in the first solution in an amount of at least 0.05 mol/l, (c) at least 0.005 mol/l antioxidant for the color developing agent, (d) a water- miscible or water-soluble hydroxy-containing straight chain organic solvent for the free base color developing agent having a molecular weight of 50-200, (e) at least 0.001 mol/l triazinylstilbene optical brightening agent and (f) a first chemical base and (2) a second solution of pH 7-12.5 containing (a) water, (b) a buffer, (c) a second chemical base and (d) at least 0.001 mol/l primary phosphonic acid metal ion sequestering agent.
