Polyalkylated 3,4-dihydrocoumarins are made by reacting 3, 4-dihydrocoumarin with an alkylating agent which is an olefin, mono-hydroxy or dihydroxy alcohol or an ether at 0-80 DEG C. in the presence of an acid alkylation catalyst which contains not more than 5% by weight of water and which is sulphuric, phosphoric or chlorosulphonic acid or an inert alkyl sulphonic or alkyl phosphonic acid, the resulting dihydrocoumarin being polyalkylated in the benzenoid ring. Suitable alkylating agents are the 1-alkenes, straight-chain and cyclic alcohols and diols and straight-chain and cyclic ethers. Numerous polyalkylated dihydrocoumarins which can be made by the present process are specified. The compounds are useful as aroma chemicals (see Division A5). The examples relate to 6,8-di-t-butyl-, 6,8- and 5,7-diisopropyl-, 6,8-dicyclohexyl-, 6,8-dihexyl-, 6,8 - di - n - butyl and 5,6 - and 7,8 - [1,1,4,4 -tetramethyltetramethylene] - 3,4 - dihydrocoumarin.ALSO:Polyalkylated 3,4-dihydrocoumarins are used as aroma chemicals Diisopropyl-3, 4-dihydrocoumarin, for example, possesses a long lasting musk odour. Example 8 describes a floral blend composed of diisopropyl-3, 4-dihydrocoumarin, retivert acetate, lingylacetate, hydroxycitronellal, phenylethyl alcohol, citronellol, linalool, methyl ionone gamma, benzyl alcohol, guaic acetate and a -amylcinnanic aldehyde. Other blends containing two different polyalkylated -3, 4-dihydrocoumarins are specified.
|
