[Also in Division B6] A process of manufacturing a ball-point pen cartridge comprises narrowing the upper end of a metal tube 1, Fig. 2, narrowing the lower end 5, applying a tubular point 7 to the lower end 5, introducing a liquid ink into the tubular point 7, adding a ball 8 to end of tubular point 7 and retaining the ball in position by flanging. Apparatus for carrying out the process, Fig. 4, comprises a number of stations along a feed path, each station carrying out one of the steps of the process. Metal tubes are placed in a hopper 13, which feeds them one at a time to a device 14 which includes a hammer pin 16 with a headstock 15, and a hammer 17. The hammer 17 acts on the tube to reduce one end thereof into the narrow end portion 4. The tube is then released so that it rolls down incline 18 to a channel 18a. At this location a plunger (9, Fig. 3), is delivered by a hopper 20 and directed into the opening of the tube by an advancing mechanism 21. The tube then rolls down incline 18<SP>1</SP> into a hopper 22 for delivery to a second mechanism 46 for effecting the narrowing of the opposite end of the tube. After release from the second narrowing mechanism, the tube rolls down incline 1811 and is introduced into one of a plurality of bores 24 in a rotatable disc 25. The disc indexes the tube through various stations, at the first of which the tubular point 7 is joined to the narrowed portion 5. At the second station the tube is aligned with an inking gun 27 which injects the ink into the tube from a reservoir 28. At the next station a ball is placed on the end of the tubular point 7, and at the final station the tubular point 7 is flanged by a rimming device 30. At a subsequent stage, a stopper 10 of air permeable material, is inserted to the narrowed portion 4 which is subsequently crimped in order to retain the stopper in position.
