PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the load such as a waste liquid treatment, by carrying out the production of an aromatic nitro compound useful as a raw material for a medicine, an agrochemical, or the like, without using a strong acid. SOLUTION: When producing the aromatic nitro compound by nitrating an aromatic compound having at least one substitutable hydrogen on the aromatic ring, the nitration is carried out in the presence of a nitrate and a carboxylic anhydride by using a rare earth-based catalyst represented by the general formula (1): RE(OSO2Rf)3 (1) (wherein, RE is a rare earth atom; Rf is a perfluoroalkyl group).
