PURPOSE: To provide a refrigerator/air conditioner and its controlling method in which the control data, and the like, of apparatus constituting the refrigerator/air conditioner can be rewritten or written efficiently using a communication telegraphic message and its monitor in which a countermeasure is taken against writing error of the control data, and the like, of apparatus constituting the refrigerator/air conditioner. CONSTITUTION: The refrigerator/air conditioner comprises outdoor units 1, 2, 3, indoor units 11, 21, 31, 32, 33 coupled with the outdoor units 1, 2, 3 through piping, and controllers for controlling these outdoor units 1, 2, 3 and indoor units 11, 21, 31, 32, 33. Each controller has a rewritable memory for storing control data, and the like, and a unit 5 for rewriting the control data and the like in the memory has an apparatus ID code in the data of its communication telegraphic message. The controller also has a mechanism for processing the communication telegraphic message and a mechanism for displaying the results of processing. According to the arrangement, writing error of the control data and the like is eliminated and efficiency and reliability of rewriting work are enhanced.
