PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium capable of high density recording. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium has a substrate, a base film formed on the substrate and comprising grains comprising one or more metals or alloys each having a body-centered cubic structure and one or more selected from oxides, nitrides and borides of the groups I-V elements of the periodic table and one or more metals or alloys each having a body-centered cubic structure and one or more selected from oxides, nitrides and borides of the groups I-V elements of the periodic table as components constituting the grain boundaries of the grains and a magnetic film formed on the base film directly or by way of another layer.
