PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical device having an optical element using an electric capillary effect in which the driving of the element can be controlled according the temperature and influences of hysteresis can be neglected or the influences of hysteresis can be easily corrected for controlling to drive the optical element. SOLUTION: The optical device has an optical element which changes its optical characteristics by changes in the interfacial form by application of voltage and has a means to generate a transient second voltage to be applied before a first voltage to apply a specified voltage is generated so as to apply the first voltage as proper voltage for the ambient temperature of the optical element. Thus, the driving of the element can be controlled according to temperature. The influences of hysteresis can be neglected or the influences of hysteresis can be easily corrected.
