Finely divided solids suspended in an aqueous medium are precipitated by the addition of a water-soluble cationic polymer or water-soluble salt thereof, wherein the cationic polymer has a molecular weight of at least 50,000 and contains at least 50 mole per cent of units of the formula <FORM:1056791/C1/1> in which p is 0 or 1; R1 when not joined to R4 represents H or a hydrocarbon group; R2 represents H or a hydrocarbon or -(CH2CH2NH)2H group where z is 1 to 4; and R3 is H, halogen, haloalkyl, alkoxycarbonyl or hydrocarbon. The polymers are prepared as described in Specification 1,056,793. The polymer may be added to an aqueous suspension to be dewatered in an amount of 0.001-5% based on the weight of suspended matter. Larger amounts tend to faster dewatering. Data are given illustrating the action with clay suspensions, the clarification of waste activated sludge, and the filtration and clarification of spent biological sewage sludge.ALSO:Finely divided solids suspended in an aqueous medium are precipitated by the addition of a water-soluble cationic polymer or water-soluble salt thereof, wherein the cationic polymer has a molecular weight of at least 50,000 and contains at least 50 mole per cent of units of the formula <FORM:1056791/C3/1> in which p represents zero or 1; R1 when not joined to R4 represents hydrogen or a hydrocarbon group; R2 represents hydrogen, a hydrocarbon group or a -(CH2CH2NH)zH group where z is an integer of 1 to 4; R3 represents hydrogen, halogen, haloalkyl, or an alkoxy carbonyl or a hydrocarbon group.
