Glass spacer has a glass matrix having a volume electronic conductivity of 10<-13>-10<-5> ohm<-1>.cm<-1> and a modulus of elasticity of at least 90 GPa. Glass matrix composition comprises (in molar %): 25-75 SiO2, 0-40 Al2O3, 0-10 ZrO2 0-10, R2O (R = Li, Na or K) 0-10, R'O (R' = Mg, Ca, Sr or Ba) and 1-30 transition metal oxides in various oxidation states. Preferred Features: The glass matrix includes at least 1% Li2O. The total amount transition metal oxides present in the glass matrix is above 5%. The glass matrix can contain rare earth oxides in amount 1-25 molar % and/or nitrogen. The density of the glass matrix is more than 3. The spacer has prismatic form whose cross-section is an orthogonal polygon and preferably cross-shaped. The vertices of the polygonal cross-section are rounded with a radius of curvature of 2-10 microns, preferably 5-10 microns. The spacer has electrical resistance 10<-5>-10<7> G Ohm , most preferably 10 G Ohm , a temperature corresponding to the Strain Point 530 deg C, and an expansion coefficient of 60-90 /* 10<-7> K<-1>. The spacer, which can be at least partially diffusing, is obtained by drawing of a previously machined or extruded preform, or by pultrusion. An Independent claim is given for the use of a spacer for maintaining a space between two glass sheets in the production of a display screen, such as a plasma display or a dot matrix display, or in the production of vacuum glazing and/or flat lamps.
