A latching mechanism (14) of a circuit breaker operating mechanism (10) comprises a primary latch (34) and a secondary latch (54). The primary latch (34) is of a general H-shape and includes elongated leg members (44) connected by a cross member (46) and has notched portions (48) thereon proximate the first ends of the elongated leg members (44), reset feet (50) depending from the second ends of the elongated leg members (44), and tabs (32) protruding from the elongated leg members (44) at points intermediate the first and second ends and extending in the general direction of the reset feet (50). The elongated leg members (44) of the primary latch (34) are pivotally mounted on an axis that extends laterally through a cross member (46). The secondary latch (54) is of a general inverted U-shaped and includes elongated leg members (44) connected by a base member (64) and has notched portions (68) thereon proximate first ends of the elongated leg members (62). The elongated leg members (62) of the secondary latch (54) are also pivotally mounted on pins (56) that protrude from the base member (64). The latching mechanism (14) is engaged when the notched portions (48, 68) of the primary latch (34) and the secondary latch (54) are engaged and when the primary latch (34) is engaged with a cradle assembly (18).
