PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a mesoionic complex of metal salt useful as an activator in a method of forming a coloring matter by a coupling reaction not utilizing an oxidation-reduction reaction. SOLUTION: This mesoionic complex of metal salt is represented by general formula (I) (M is any metal atom selected from among silver, zinc and copper; n is an integer of 0-7; p is an integer of 1-24; A is an atomic group having a mono-to hexavalent negative charge to neutralize an electric charge of the metal atom; q is an integer of 0-24; B is an atomic group of general formula (II); r is an integer of 1-24; Y is O, S or N-R3; R1 and R3 are each independently a substituent group; R2 is hydrogen atom or a substituent group).
