PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyester of which the chips can be treated with water while reducing the staining of a treatment vessel and a pipeline, can give molded items hardly exhibiting residual strange taste and odor, can give bottles excellent in clarity and exhibiting a good crystallization at the cap section, and hardly stain a metal mold when molded. SOLUTION: In a method for producing a polyester wherein polyester chips are treated with water in a treatment vessel, water discharged from the vessel and returned again thereto contains at most 100,000/10 mL particles having particle sizes of 1-40μm.
