APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR FILTERING PARTICULATE IN AN EXHAUSTTRAP

An apparatus and method are disclosed for removing or filtering particulate from an internal combustion engine exhaust and/or for regenerating through flow particulate traps (1a, 1b, 1c) with the incoming flow of exhaust gas. T he particulate trap modules (1a, 1b, 1c) have through flow passageways (2) with porous walls (3) for filtering particulate in the exhaust gas. The passagewa ys (2) are regenerated by periodically passing the exhaust gas therethrough at a velocity that is sufficient to erode or dislodge the soot and/or ash. Apparatus is provided to separate, burn, and store the dislodged soot and/or ash. Heating devices (19) and catalysts may also be used to aid in the remov al of soot and/or ash particulate or other gaseous emissions.
