PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrostatic capacity type distance sensor for an obstacle detection system for detecting an obstacle, which is present at the same position, at the same position regardless of the shape thereof. SOLUTION: The electrostatic capacity type distance sensor consists of a transmission electrode 1 for emitting an electromagnetic wave to form an electromagnetic field, a detection electrode 2 for detecting the electromagnetic field around the transmission electrode, an electrostatic capacity detection means 4 for detecting the electrostatic capacity between the detection electrode 2 and the obstacle from the intensity of the electromagnetic field detected by the detection electrode 2, an electrostatic capacity change quantity detection means 8 for detecting the change quantity of the electrostatic capacity between the detection electrode 2 and the obstacle, a shape judging means 10 for judging the shape of the obstacle from the output of the electrostatic capacity change quantity detection means 8, an electrostatic capacity correction means 11 for correcting the electrostatic capacity between the detection electrode 2 and the obstacle detected by the electrostatic capacity detection means 4 from the output of the shape judging means 10 and a distance conversion means 5 for converting the electrostatic capacity corrected by the electrostatic capacity correction means 11 to the distance between the detection electrode 2 and the obstacle.
