PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To extract a fine, small-break edge image of an outline image of a photographed body from an input image at high speed and with high precision. SOLUTION: The vertical and horizontal density gradient values of individual pixels of the input image are calculated (210), the edge intensity is determined according to the vertical and horizontal density gradient values (220), and further the edge normal direction is determined from the vertical and horizontal density gradient values (230); and the pixels constituting the edge are extracted according to the direction of the edge normals and edge intensity of the respective pixels (240) and the edge intensity of the extracted constituent pixels is processed according to a threshold to genearte a binary image of the outline of the body (250).
