PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a television receiver which can automatically display an optimum image corresponding to a video source. SOLUTION: A video source discrimination circuit 2 samples the prescribed position of a video signal and a microcomputer analyzes it and discriminates what type of video source the video signal is (whether a non-image part exist in upper/lower parts or whether a caption is included in the non-image part). A video signal processing circuit 3 digitally performs horizontal and vertical compression/expansion and a deflection circuit 4 manipulates the waveform of deflection and performs horizontal and vertical compression/expansion so that an optimum image corresponding to the video source can be obtained, based on the discrimination result. Thus, the image displayed on an image tube 5 is converted for aspect ratio.
