A precursor membrane which can be block polymerized, has a surface which undergoes prior plasma treatment in an oxidative atmosphere. A side chain polymer is block polymerized onto the precursor membrane. A proton-conducting functional group is introduced into the side chain polymer unit. An Independent claim is included for the corresponding method of manufacture of the electrolyte membrane. Preferred features: The precursor membrane is formed as any individual type of polymer and copolymer. The side chain polymer is a hydrocarbon polymer, into which a proton-conducting functional group can be introduced, or with which the proton-conducting functional group is introduced.
