Block copolymers, useful for the production of membranes for separation processes, contain non-sulfonated aromatic polyethersulfones and blocks of sulfonated aromatic polyethersulfones

Block copolymers (I) containing non-sulfonated aromatic polyethersulfones and blocks of sulfonated aromatic polyethersulfones are characterized in that the block length of non-sulfonated aromatic polyethersulfones comprise at least 10 repeating units and the sequence of the main chain at the transition between neighboring block is the same as that within the blocks of aromatic polyethersulfones. Independent claims are included for (i) a process for the production of the block copolymer (I) by polycondensation of divalent hydroxylated and/or halogenated ether- and sulfone group containing aromatic compounds, of which one reactant has additionally at at least one aromatic ring. (ii) a synthetic membrane containing a hydrophilic aromatic polyethersulfone(I).
