A mediator system is claimed which is obtained by mixing a polyvalent metal salt with an amino group-containing complexer (K1) and an amino group-free, OH group-containing complexer (K2) in an aqueous alkaline medium. A mediator system is claimed which is obtained by mixing a polyvalent metal salt with an amino group-containing complexer (K1) and an amino group-free, OH group-containing complexer (K2) in an aqueous alkaline medium, the complexers optionally being in salt form and the molar ratios K1 and K2 : metal ion being 0.1-10 : 1 and 0.1-5 : 1 respectively.
