Feed drive is provided by an endless toothed belt (6,13) off a belt motor fixed immovably in or on the lathe bed, with the belt itself fixed to the tool slide moving with the belt. The belt should be clamped immovably between the two lathe sides and is engaged by the motor pinion for belt movement. Gearbox, rack and pinion of the machine can be replaced by a toothed belt.
