PURPOSE: A filter pipe-shaped nonsmoking medium containing macromolecular water-soluble chitosan having molecular weight 10,000-1,500,000 units is provided to decrease the amount of nicotine and tar for maintaining the health of smokers, and to alleviate the harm done to non-smokers caused by the indirect smoking. CONSTITUTION: The nonsmoking medium of a cigarette is manufactured by a variety of methods like the followings: containing 5mg of powdered macromolecular water-soluble chitosan into the lower part of the medium and carbon into the upper part thereof by making the medium as the double fabric; and containing 5mg of powdered macromolecular water-soluble chitosan into the upper part of the medium and carbon into the lower part thereof by making the medium as the double fabric.
