Desorbing especially low molecular compounds adsorbed onto adsorbents, where the adsorbent may be a material with a pore diameter above 5 ?A, which can adsorb microwaves, or has its surface set so it is microwave adsorbent, comprises bringing the adsorbent into a desorption applicator together with the compounds which are linked either directly or indirectly via additional getter materials, and exposing to microwaves in the frequency region 0.9 to 12 GHz. The power input is controlled such that the temperatures in the applicator remain below the decomposition temperatures of the linked compounds. At least during the exposure, a constant flow of scavenging gas is maintained through the applicator, and the composition of the exit gas stream is measured (7) until the end of the desorption process is observed, or some other duration of time has passed. Also claimed is a desorption applicator to carry out the above process, having a container (2) with at least one feed opening (3) to receive the adsorbent (4). This container has at least one controllable scavenging gas feed (5) and at least one exit gas outlet (6). There is a gas- and microwave-tight microwave transmitter (11) coupled to the container by a microwave input (10). The container is itself surrounded by a thermal insulation (100).
|
