The data carrier consists of a card-like carrier (2) with a data region for visually readable data. A covering layer (3) that is opaque at least in a visible wavelength range is applied to the data region, and is removable only by destroying itself, irreversibly changing itself or irreversibly changing the card-like carrier. The data are applied to the card-like carrier using a laser beam (LS) which passes through the covering layer. An independent claim is included for a method of manufacturing a data carrier for visually readable information.
