PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a highly active ammonia synthesis catalyst. SOLUTION: This ammonia synthesis catalyst mainly comprises a cobalt- molybdenum composite nitride. The surface of the catalyst is oxidized to be passivated, and then is reduced to be reactivated. The catalyst mainly comprising the cobalt-molybdenum composite nitride is formed by nitriding cobalt molybdate hydrate. When an alkali metal is added, its activity is further increased. This alkali metal added catalyst is formed by adding cesium nitrate or potassium nitrate to the cobalt molybdate hydrate and nitriding it. The cobalt molybdate hydrate is obtained by mixing an aqueous solution of cobalt nitrate and an aqueous solution of ammonium molybdate and heating the mixture to be boiled. |
