PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forming a composite coating film that gives good appearance of the coating film combined with good coating workability, especially workability under high humidity conditions. SOLUTION: In the method for forming a composite coating film by coating an article to be coated with an aqueous base coat composition on and coating thereon a clear cost composition, the aqueous base coat composition comprises an emulsion resin obtained by emulsion polymerization of a mixture ofα,β- ethylenically unsaturated monomers containing not less than 65 wt.% methacrylate whose ester portion has one or two carbon atoms having an acid value of 3-50 and a pigment.
