PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vertical agitator for high-viscosity non-Newtonian fluid which can reduce the swirling-up of liquid onto an agitation shaft even under conditions in which the swirling-up phenomenon of the liquid is generated to improve an agitation/mixing condition even when the liquid is high in viscosity and markedly shorten a uniformly mixing time. SOLUTION: In the agitator in which the agitation shaft is inserted into an agitation tank from above, an agitation blade is rotated through the shaft with a driving source outside the tank, and the liquid in the tank is agitated, the lower end of the shaft connected to the driving source is held above the surface of the liquid in the tank, and the shaft and the blade are connected in a side shaft part which is shifted aside from the axis of the shaft and penetrates the surface of the liquid.
