<p>Apparatus (Fig. 1) for depositing a film of material on band or sheet stock (26) comprises an application roller (22) a spraying device (20) to spray the material on the roller, a switch (38) operated at intervals dependent on the speed of the roller and arranged to initiate the operation of the spraying device and a settable timer (44) enabling the duration of operation of the spraying device during each interval to be set independently of changes in the speed of the roller. The spraying device preferably consists of a number of separate nozzles (40) distributed over the length of the roller with means for selecting one or more nozzles for operation according to the width of the band and the switch is operated, preferably by a cam (36) driven from the roller (22), the switch being actuated once per revolution of the cam. The timer (44) is preferably set manually and the roller (22) is covered with absorbent material e.g. felt.
