PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface treating method capable of improving the corrosion resistance and adhesion with a coated film corresponding to environmental control as for magnesium or a magnesium alloy. SOLUTION: In this surface treating method for magnesium or a magnesium alloy, magnesium or a magnesium alloy is treated with organic acid, is next treated with a solution containing aluminum salt and is thereafter humidified and dried.
