PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the precision of discriminating a dot part from the part of a character or a line picture in a method/device for discriminating an area for discriminating whether each pixel of picture information is a pixel of a dot area. SOLUTION: It is decided whether either one of three pixels positioned in the lower direction of a pixel under consideration is an edge pixel (S21). In the case of affirmative, the value of a removable flag is set to be '1', and this vale is kept until a non-edge pixel appears next (S23, 24). Whether a pixel adjacent on the right side of the pixel under consideration is an edge pixel is decided (S25) and when it is the edge pixel or when the value of the removable flag is set to be '1', the edge detecting result E (i, j) of the pixel under consideration is set to be '0'. Thus, a large difference occurs in edge density between a character area and a dot area. Then, if performing dot area deciding processing by using this result, the precision of discriminating the dot part from the part of the character or the line picture is improved. |
