Optical communication system apparatus and methods of operating an optical communications system (1100, 1200) is described, wherein the system advantageously may utilize existing optical fiber (1101) networks and provide significantly increased channel capacity. In accordance with one aspect of the invention the system apparatus (1360) provides for a plurality of communications channels and a processor unit receives request for allocation of one or more channels from a node (1331) coupled to the optical communications system and the system apparatus allocates one or more channels selected from unused channels.
