摘要 1,085,352. Grinding. A. A. JONES & SHIPMAN Ltd., and J. HOULDSWORTH. Nov. 20, 1964, No. 3502/64. Divided out of 1,085,351. Heading B3D. A grinding machine comprises a wheelhead carrying a rotatable grinding wheel and workpiece-supporting means for supporting and rotating a workpiece, the wheelhead or the workpiece-supporting means being mounted on a support reciprocable longitudinally on the base frame of the machine, the support having two slideways which run on two corresponding slideways on the base frame, one of the slideways on the support and its corresponding slideway on the base frame being flat, whereas the other two corresponding slideways are such as to locate the support against transverse movement relatively to the base frame; the machine is characterized in that the flat slideways are disposed at a location below the complementary slideways and are at a distance from the latter which is greater than the distance between the complementary slideways and either the axis of the grinding wheel or the axis of a mounted workpiece (whichever is carried by the support), and the two flat slideways are disposed so that their plane of contact is parallel to the direction of upwards and/or downwards movement of the support caused by any imperfections in elevation in the complementary slideways, whereby any imperfections in the flat slideways and any relative movement of the two flat slideways in their plane of contact as a result of imperfections in elevation in the complementary slideways cause only slight rocking of the support about the complementary slideways and hence produce only negligible relative movement between the workpieoe and the grinding wheel in the plane containing the axes of the latter. A workpiece 1, Fig. 3, is rotatably mounted between centres carried by a headstock 2 and a tailstock adjustably secured to a frame 4 angularly adjustable about a vertical pivot on a support 5 reciprocated to traverse the workpiece past a grinding wheel 7. The support 5 has a flat way 10 and a vee way 9 running respectively on a flat way 10a and a vee way 9a on the base frame. The vee way 9a extends along the whole length of the base frame; the vee way 9 is constituted by two short sections disposed one at each end of the support, such that the distances on the vee way 9a traversed respectively by the two sections do not overlap. The vertical limb 5a of the support is triangular, and the flat way 10 is shorter than the flat way 10a. In a modification (Fig. 5), the support has forwardly and rearwardly facing flat ways (24, 10) running on rearwardly and forwardly facing flat ways (24a, 10a) on the base frame. In a modification (Fig. 6), an axis extending longitudinally of the vee ways (9, 9a) and the axis (11) of the workpiece (1) are disposed in the same horizontal plane as the axis (12) of the grinding wheel (7). To correct for imperfections of the vee ways in plan, the vee way carried by the base frame may be distorted in controlled fashion; an aperture (13, Fig. 8) at the centre of the vee way receives a head (17) having eccentrically mounted thereon a downstanding pin (18) projecting into a recess in the base frame and rotatable about its axis by gearing, linkage or piston/cylinder unit. Apertures (13) at each end of the way receive the heads of pins (14) serving as pivots. Pressure can be applied to the pins (14, 18) to clamp the way to the base frame. In a modification (Fig. 7), the long limb (5a) of the support is rearwardly cranked and has a forwardly facing flat way (10) running on a rearwardly facing flat way (10a) on the base frame.
