A connecting rod (28) cracking machine has a split mandrel with a lower jaw (60) and an upper jaw (62). A cylindrical bore (84) in one of the jaws receives a piston (86) connected to the other jaw. A fluid supply passage (82) supplies fluid under pressure to the cylindrical bore (84). A plurality of drain passages (72) connect the cylindrical bore (84) to a sump (74). The drain passages (72) are closed when the piston is retracted into the bore (84). The drain passages (72) are simultaneously opened upon the piston (86) moving a fixed distance from the retracted position.
