Triode field emission display comprising substrates 16 and 11, cathode 15, carbon nanotubes 14, anode 12 coated with phosphor 13 and extraction electrode 21 which is separated from the anode. The amount of electrons, emitted from the nanotubes, colliding with the phosphor on the anode can be controlled by varying the voltage V<SB>e</SB> applied to the extraction electrodes. The cathode 15 and anode 12 may be formed as lines in a striped pattern with the extraction electrodes 21 formed in a striped pattern parallel to the anode lines.
