摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technology for improving accuracy of detection of inactive nozzles. SOLUTION: In a printing apparatus performing printing by discharging ink drops from a plurality of nozzles, at first, after a light from a light emitting part 40a for emitting the light is once converged at the first light converging part 41, the light is taken out through an aperture 43a for convergence being narrower than the irradiating range of the light and the optical path from the aperture 43a for convergence to a light receiving part 40b for receiving this light is arranged in such a way that it intersects the paths of ink drops discharged from the nozzles and the light is emitted by driving the light emitting part 40a. Then, the ink drops are discharged toward a space with an optical strength with a specified value or larger among the optical path from the aperture 43a for convergence to a light receiving part 40b. Thereafter, whether or not the light received by the light receiving part 40b is shut off by the discharged ink drops is detected to detect the inactive nozzles.
