PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and method for inspecting the hermetically sealed surface region of a container with respect to presence of irregularities which are unacceptable as a commodity. SOLUTION: An apparatus for inspecting the hermetically sealed surface region 36 of a container finish part has a light source 44, arranged so as to apply linear laser beam made parallel 46 (that is, a laser beam where the longitudinal size becomes several times that of lateral size) with respect to the hermetically sealed surface region of the container. The linear laser beam at the place of the hermetically sealed surface region of the container crosses the axial line of the container in a longer dimension direction at right angles and comes into contact with the axial line of the container in a shorter dimensional direction. An optical sensor 52 is provided, so as to receive the part 54 of the linear laser beam reflected from the hermetically sealed surface region of the container, to output an electric signal changed corresponding to the height of the hermetically sealed surface region, in relation to the light source and the sensor. A lens system 70 is arranged, so as to apply only the light energy, reflected from the hermetically sealed surface region in a plane parallel to the common plane of the axial line of the container and the sensor, to the optical sensor.
