A carbon material comprising particles having a coarsely granular surface, which material contains mesophase pitch as a main raw material, has at least two granular carbonaceous projections having a diameter not more than a minimum particle diameter on a particle surface and has an oxygen content of 0.1% by weight or more and a process for the production thereof.
