PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compound substrate, its manufacturing method and electroluminescence element using its compound element, which, although being a dielectric layer of titanic acid barium, does not react with the substrate at firing and has a dielectric layer with excellent properties of such as dielectric constant, insulating resistance, voltage resistance and reliability, and which enables making an electroluminescence element having a sufficiently high light- emitting characteristics. SOLUTION: This is an electroluminescence element which comprises an electrically insulating substrate 4 made of mainly zirconia, an electrode layer 6 formed on the substrate 4, a dielectric layer 8 composed of ceramic sintered compact formed on the electrode layer 6, a luminous layer 12 formed on the dielectric layer 8, and a transparent electrode layer 16 formed on the luminous layer 12.
