The procedure consists of machining a hole (3) in the suspension arm (1) so that it is slightly smaller than the outer diameter of a tubular axle (4), and cooling the axle and heating the arm before fitting the two together to make a fretted joint. The axle is cooled to about -150 deg C, e.g. with liquid nitrogen, and the arm is heated to about 200 deg C to give a difference in diameters between the axle and hole of about 0.3 mm, and one of the surfaces is coated with an adhesive before they are fitted together e.g. with the aid of a press.
