PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for polymerizing a vinyl acetate-based polymer as a raw material for a colorless vinyl acetate-based saponified polymer product where odor and fisheye in forming a film can be restrained and the formed film is excellent in transparency, and to provide a method for producing the saponified polymer product. SOLUTION: Vinyl acetate is polymerized singly or in combination with other monomer in the presence of both of a hydroxylactone-based compound and a polymerization catalyst. The saponified polymer product is produced by saponifying the obtained (co)polymer.
