A magnetic compass comprises a compass card 3 the centre of the card consisting of a flexible diaphragm 1 e. g. of rubber, the centre of the diaphragm being clamped between two aligned pins 4, 5, rotatable in bearings 6. The pins have small flat end surfaces between which the diaphragm is clamped and a minute connecting pin (not shown) passes through the diaphragm and into holes in the centres of the pins 4, 5. Stop discs 7 are mounted around the bearings 6 to limit the movement of the card 3 out of its normal horizontal plane, but its allowed movement is arranged to be at least 60 degrees from the horizontal in any direction. The pins 4, 5 rotate with the card 3 and their movements may be transmitted to a remote indicating device.</p> |
