PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of installing a portal crane capable of shortening an installation period, improving a construction conditions, reducing the amount of installation equipment and materials, and saving a labor for field erection work. SOLUTION: This method of installing a portal crane comprises the steps of (1) individually manufacturing six blocks, that is, a girder, a trolley swing leg upper part, a swing leg lower part, a rigid leg upper part, and a rigid leg lower part, in a manufacturing plant, (2) transporting the six blocks on sea by a transportation pontoon, (3) unloading the swing leg lower part, rigid leg lower part, swing leg upper part, and rigid leg upper part from the transportation pontoon onto the land near an installation site using an offshore crane and disposing these blocks in erected state, (4) lifting the trolley by the offshore crane and fixedly mounting on the girder, (5) lifting the girder using the offshore crane and connecting the swing leg upper part to the rigid leg upper part, (6) connecting the swing leg lower part to the swing leg upper part in the state where the girder is lifted and connecting the swing leg lower part to the rigid leg upper part, and (7) moving a completely assembled portal crane to the installation position by the offshore crane for installation.
