PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a blood cleaning membrane for the artificial kidney having high water-permeability, high fractional characteristics and excellent blood compatibility at the same time obtained by applying a membrane of a hydrophobic polymer to the surface of a cellulosic or polyvinyl alcohol type blood cleaning membrane. SOLUTION: A blood cleaning membrane is obtained by polymerizing a hydrophobic low-molecular compound on the surface of a blood cleaning membrane based on a polymer having a hydroxyl group by chemical vapor deposition to fix the formed hydrophobic polymer to the surface of the membrane and has an ultrafiltration speed of water of 5 ml/m2.hr.mmHg or more. The thickness of the hydrophobic polymer laminated by chemical vapor deposition is 5-1,000 nm.
