PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of efficiently producing polyvinyl alcohol flame retardant fiber that is useful as clothes, industrial materials and living materials with high cost performance. SOLUTION: A polyvinyl alcohol polymer and a halogen-containing polymer are dissolved in a common solvent and the resultant spinning dope is extruded into the coagulation bath through the dry or wet process to produce the objective PVA flame-retardant fiber wherein the particle size of the halogen polymer is adjusted to >=150μm on the average and <=600μm at a maximum.
