PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To discriminate a character data which is character-recognized and requires storage as character data and a graphic picture data which does not require character recognition, to transmit them in different transmission modes and to shorten the transmission time between a image reader and a PC. SOLUTION: An image reader is provided with an optical detection means reading an original and outputting image data, a storage means storing outputted image data, a communication interface means outputting image data to an outer data processor and a control means controlling the optical detection means, the storage means and the communication interface means. When image data is transmitted to the data processor, the control means discriminates character data and graphic data, transmits an image data part divided into character data in a first transfer mode and transmits an image data part decided to be a graphic data in a second transmission mode different from the first transmission mode.
