PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically measure the three-dimensional coordinates of big structure, within a short time and with high accuracy. SOLUTION: The three-dimensional coordinate measuring method measures the three-dimensional coordinates of a target from the measuring distance and measuring angle, when the optical axis of an electro-optical distance meter 1a is matched with a target point using the electro-optical distance meter 1a that measures the slant distance to the target point on the surface of a measuring object and an angle meter 1b that measures an inclination angle between the distance meter 1a and the optical axis of the meter 1a. The presence of the target within the micro collimation range on the surface of the measuring object is detected in advance, and this range is scanned step-wise by the whole measuring object using motors 2, 3. The outline of the three-dimensional coordinates to a plurality of target points are identified, and the optic axis of the meter 1a is substantially made to coincide so that one of the identified target points falls within the micro collimation range and thereafter is matched with one of the points.
