A disabled person may be lifted or supported by means of an apparatus comprising a supporting frame member, which may be in the form of a column (10) and a lever (11), which is pivotally mounted on the supporting frame member or column (10) at a pivot point (12). Connecting means, such as a sling or a saddle, allows the person to be suspended from or to sit on the lever (11) adjacent to its free end (21). In order to lift or support the person the lever (11) biasing means (13), such as a spring device, is biasing the lever in an upward direction. The lifting or supporting intensity of the biasing means may be regulated or varied by means (17, 19) for changing the moment of force or torque applied to the lever (11) by the biasing means, so as to allow adjustment of the lifting or supporting force (W) applied to the person to be lifted or supported.
