A method and apparatus for allowing transfer of data to remote terminals during dead time in a transaction. When a terminal (20) accesses a remote host (10), for example to authorise a financial transaction, it is common for there to be a delay between receiving the request and transmitting approval. It is disclosed that this dead time can be used to send data to the terminal, for example to update software, display advertisements or download data to a smartcard, without the necessity to establish a separate communications link. |
